2024 Nagoya University Ius Commune Prize Call for Applications

1. Objective

In conjunction with the Center for Asian Legal Exchange, the Nagoya University Graduate School of Law performs research and offers instruction in law and politics. International students at Nagoya University include serving members of the administrative and judicial branches, professors of law and politics as well as graduate students from their respective countries and form a bridge between Japan and each country through the education of legal professionals.
To advance the education of legal professionals who will support the future of Asia, the Nagoya University Ius Commune Prize was created to support and encourage the research of students with bright futures who have written superior master’s thesis in Japanese or English.
The term “Ius Commune” means “common law.” This prize expands on that meaning to include “building a peaceful and prosperous world while pursuing justice, perspectives from Asia.” Therefore, thesis on legal approaches as well as politics and other related fields are eligible for the prize.
 

2. Summary of Prize

I. Qualifications for application

Students who have finished or are qualified to finish the Nagoya University Graduate School of Law master’s course between October 2023 and September 30, 2024, whose thesis demonstrates various ideas for “building a peaceful and prosperous world while pursuing justice, perspectives from Asia” and are judged to have written superior thesis.
 

II. Prize Contents

Excellence Award (First Place): One recipient, Award Certificate and Prize (¥70,000)
Excellence Award: Limited recipients, Award Certificate and Prize (¥50,000)
※If neither the Excellence Award (First Place) or Excellence Award are awarded, then several students will receive the Outstanding Award, including a certificate and prize (¥30,000).
※The Ius Commune Prize and Excellence Award are provided by the donations of the Special Fund for Future Lawyers for Asia.
 

3. Application Method and Forms

Supervising professors may nominate students, students may also self-nominate using the following form and submit by the deadline.
 
Nomination by Supervising Professor
Please send the following documents to the e-mail address listed below.
1. Abstract of the thesis
2. Letter of Recommendation by Supervising Professor(Attached Form 1)
Supervisors must receive the student’s consent either before or after submitting the application. If the student does not give consent, the application will not be processed.

Self-Nomination by Student
Please submit the following three forms. 1 and 2 may be emailed directly to the e-mail address below. Please ask your supervising professor to fill out form 3 and send to the e-mail address below.

4. Application Deadline

(1) Applicants who finished or are qualified to finish the master’s course by March 2024
Application period: March 6, 2024 (Wednesday) – April 15, 2024 (Monday) 16:00
(2) Applicants who will finish the master’s course by September 2024.
Application period: June 12, 2024 (Wednesday) – July 22, 2024 (Monday) 16:00
*Application deadline is Japan time and will be strictly observed. No late applications will be accepted.
 

5. Selection Method

Thesis will be evaluated by a committee whose members are nominated by the Dean of Graduate School of Law.
If multiple students are nominated by the same Supervising professor, they may be ranked by the supervising professor.
 

6. Method of Informing Results and Award Ceremony

Results will be announced in September 2024, applicants (both nominated by supervising professors and self-nominated applicants) will be informed via email. Please reply as soon as you receive this email.
We request that award recipients and their supervising professors attend the award ceremony and thesis presentations that will be held in late September 2024. We will inform recipients of the details for this event later. We request that supervising professors support students in preparing their presentation if the student did not write their thesis in Japanese.
