Objectives

Basic Concept

The human resources in the field of law and political sciences were highly evaluated on elements as investigating problems, organization management, social management, or conflict resolution. In this program, we try to educate future leaders to demonstrate this kind of practical abilities globally without border between Japan and foreign countries, through practice in institution transplantation as legal assistance projects.

Our Goal

In this program, we try to educate professionals with the following abilities.

  • Advanced legal ability including drafting bills.
  • Strong commitment in Asia.
  • Ability to understand and compare diverse societies in flexible mind.
  • Ability to design and propose well-functioning, appropriate institution in legal transplantation.
  • Ability to organize and manage team of professionals from diverse background.
  • Ability to communicate with other people and professionals.

We require students to obtain proficiency in English and one Asian language.

Characteristics

Students are recommended to start their career from professionals working overseas, with basic research abilities.
The planned fields of work are management in global corporations or legal assistance projects, planning in international assistance agencies, consulting in foreign governments, or working in international organizations.

(1) Investigate and Specify Social Problems

Train abilities in research, solution design, and management, through "earning by doing' method in the field of legal assistance.

(2) Comparative Legal / Social Study by Students' Team

Through explaining and comparing her own society, law, and politics each other, students from different countries can discover important research topic, while establishing international human relations and lifelong trust through joint work.

(3) Organize Diverse Professionals outside Law

Train management abilities to collaborate with professionals from other field than law, to implement large scale research.

(4) International Supervision and Internship

Supervision will be given by the team of professionals worldwide, as corporation managers, government officers, and researchers, including Nagoya University Alumni.
Students shall join in International Internship every summer, which will be supervised by professionals worldwide.

(5) Multilingual Research Environment

Train multilingual research abilities with help of Asian Language OPAC of National Diet Library, etc.

(6) Students Recruitment

We will accept recommendation from the network of universities both in Japan and worldwide, in addition to the general selection. We try to select excellent applicants through interview made by international team.

The Program for Leading Graduate Schools

The "Leading Programs in Doctoral Education", often called as the "Leading Graduate Schools", is a national scheme managed by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), with budget provided from the Ministry of Education in Japan (MEXT), to guide outstanding students to be globally active leaders both in industries, government, and academics, with wide vision and creativity. This program thus enhances establishment of highest level graduate schools through radical reform of education to provide qualified doctoral degree program of global level, not entangled in certain special field, by forefront professors worldwide, with help from every sphere in Japan.
The adopted programs need to (1) provide attractive environment with close supervision by forefront professors from diverse sectors not only limited to Japan, to practice subjective and creative research through competitive relation of both Japanese and foreign students, and (2) provide international and practical trainings based on real problems with help from every sector as industries, government, and academics, to guide the excellent students into active leaders in every sector.
In the FY 2011, 21 programs were adopted within 101 proposals. This program is one of 6 programs as "Only-One" category as "fostering leaders who can pioneer a new field of research", and only one adopted in the field of social sciences in all three categories.

Graduated from the School of Law, Osaka University (1971). LL.M from Osaka University (1973), and LL.M. from Yale Law School (1975). After working in Chukyo University School of Law and Osaka University School of Law, moved to the Graduate School of Law, Nagoya University in 2000. Current fields of study are Legal Informatics, and History of Legal Ideas.
