Sovath Phin: IP Laws in ASEAN: Local Laws and the Trend toward Regional Integration

We are pleased to announce a presentation by Assistant Dean and Law Professor Sovath Phin of Pannasastra University, Cambodia:

IP Laws in ASEAN: Local Laws and the Trend toward Regional Integration

This series of lectures will focus on the general theme: “IP Laws in ASEAN: Local Laws and the Trend toward Regional Integration”. To help students understand this theme, there will be four lectures. Lecture 1 will provide an overview of IP Laws in ASEAN by explaining the historical and recent development of the ASEAN IP framework and its impacts on local laws. Lecture 2 will first introduce the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and its implications for IP in the region and then look into the trend toward regional integration of IP laws and systems in the region. Lecture 3 will explain and analyze common and different interests of negotiating parties and then debate to what extent the negotiating parties would be able to address the current outstanding issues. Lecture 4 will explain the ongoing debate and challenges among stakeholders including civil society and researchers and scholars in relation to the public interests and intellectual property, and discuss among ourselves on how to address those challenges. Please note that students may also raise their own interests in relation to this theme for discussion in the lectures.
